Do you feel alive inside? What I mean by that is do you experience all kinds of emotions in a split second from nervous, to sad, to excited, to joyful or maybe you feel one at a time, very intensely. In any case you are feeling alive aren’t you? It’s not always that pleasant. Feelings are good, bad and ugly and it becomes tempting to want to mash them all down inside.
The major problem with burying all those uncomfortable emotions is that it’s pretty difficult to pull up all those good ones – love, excitement and passion – when we become masters at stuffing everything down. We absolutely need those high-level emotions in order to think outside of the box, get caught up in dreamy thoughts, set lofty goals and take bold steps.
Let those alive inside feelings out
I just got back from a bootcamp for the soul kind of course at a ranch in Northern California where we were put in all kinds of mental and physically uncomfortable (and downright scary) feats. I was there totally raw, feeling a lot of crazy messy stuff, hoping to shed a few layers from one of the most intense years of my life. I knew that in order to do just that ignoring my emotions was not an option. So I went there, heart on my sleeve ready to take on whatever I faced. Bring it on!
And they did. I went through a million different emotions – sad, ashamed, terrified, exhilarated, content, joyful and confident. There probably wasn’t a single thing I didn’t experience. It was totally challenging and absolutely worth it. The way this experience is showing up for me in my life now includes being more committed to my family, my business and to my own happiness in a very conscious way. I feel way more confident stepping out and taking stronger action. That’s what has to happen to live a fulfilling life and I am certainly committed to that!
When we can’t always take ourselves out of our every day life to invest in transformative development we still can change some simple reactions to make us feel alive every single day!
How to stay alive inside
1) Feel! Just feeling everything that comes our way is the most human thing we can possibly do. Don’t push emotions away. Let them run their course. I am way more comfortable letting what I feel linger for a while and don’t find it painful. I accept them. It’s natural and easy because that’s what we humans were born to do.
2) Discover a new comfort zone. The sure fire way to figure out what is outside of our comfort zone is by gauging our discomfort. If I feel resistant or excited about a new idea, it’s probably a good sign that it’s risky and that I need to consider it.
3) Take one step. Taking a step, any step in the direction of a goal or dream creates comfort and familiarity with new emotions. I have learned to not think too long or hard about anything. I know I just need to do something about it, and soon.
4) Spend a lot of time with good people. Our peeps are those who we can be vulnerable around and who encourage us to keep taking bold positive steps. I am finding so many ways to surround myself with awesome, supportive go-getters this season – finding ways to work with colleagues, sharing work space, joining mentorship and mastermind groups and connecting online.
Feeling alive is a fabulously fun way to live – emotionally connected and ready for anything. Woohoo!
