How to design your business model for the work and lifestyle you love

Today we’re wrapping up a month full of amazing conversations about business models. Although it takes a while to find sometimes, we all have a unique business model that suits our work and our life perfectly. Our business models evolve and change as the rest of life does, and that’s part of why I find them so fascinating.

Our guest today has gone through several different business models with her company, and is one of the most self-aware people I’ve met when it comes to aligning the way she runs her business with her lifestyle.

Molly Mahar is a coach, teacher, and soon-to-be author. She founded her community Stratejoy in 2009 to create a safe space to talk about life’s big stuff. Stratejoy has evolved over the years from one-on-one and small group coaching into a community with masterminds and group programs that Molly helms each year.

I originally came across Molly’s work when she appeared on another podcast talking about her business model. I was so intrigued by her journey that I had to have her on Scaling Deep so we could dig below the surface of how and why her business has worked so well.

Molly and I talk about the growth of her business over the past decade and some of the business models she’s implemented over the years. She has a great sense of humor about the quirks of her business and why she’s so dedicated to shaping her work around her life rather than the other way around. We also talk about what spurred her growth at each stage, how and why she let go of the program that brought her business to a financially secure level, and why she doesn’t believe in growth for growth’s sake.

I can't think of a more fantastic way to wrap up our thinking about business models - I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

What You’ll Learn from this Episode:

  • The quarter-life crisis that inspired Molly to create Stratejoy in 2009 - before coaching was as big as it is today.
  • How she eventually let go of the program that leveled up her business into its most successful (and time-intensive) iteration.
  • How Molly has transformed her programs over time using an iterative approach with lots of feedback from her clients.
  • Why she has organized her business model around her love of working with clients, not continual growth or constant sales.
  • How becoming a mom changed Molly’s approach to her business and how she wanted to spend her time.
  • Why she doesn’t love managing a team and how she’s kept her business small enough that she can do just about everything on her own.

Hey there. I know what it's like to try and fail over and over again. I've been through all the mindset ups and downs, feeling like a failure and wondering why it's so hard to attract amazing clients consistently.

I finally realized, more recently that I'd like to admit, I was still hiding. I was afraid to put my work into the world in case no one wanted it. What I really wanted was for someone to say, "hey you, your stuff is great, come share it with my audience".  Finally I realized that that would never happen, not until I started first.

Putting out my content and message into the world had to begin with me. I  committed to showing up consistently and building my own meaningful relationships. The result? Much more clarity about how to gain visibility and grow my brand. And, of course, THIS PODCAST which I'm thrilled to host!
