Being an entrepreneur is messy business with Mel Richards of Modern Traction
Having a business bestie has been a total game-changer for me. Different from having a business coach, having a business bestie has allowed me to explore new ideas, get over mental roadblocks, and rant about frustrations with someone who is truly a peer and confidant. I’m so excited to have Mel Richards on the show today, so you can all get a dose of her support and wisdom for yourselves.
Mel Richards is the founder of Modern Traction, where she helps consultants, speakers, and thought leaders craft clear, trustworthy branding while building them beautiful websites. She’s been in the business for over twenty years now and is constantly innovating and dreaming up better ways to serve her clients and create great sites.
In this episode we’re talking about the messier side of building and scaling your business, especially when you’re re-evaluating what you want out of your business and your life. We dissect some of the unique challenges that come up when you’ve been in business for a long time, what we’ve learned about niching down and experimenting with new services, and why neither of us started our businesses to feel “busy” (quite the opposite).
We also talk about the huge benefit our friendship has been over the past year, both personally and in business. Mel and I both share our perspective on what a business bestie can help you accomplish, since they can get to know your business much more intimately than many coaches or mastermind groups. We also make a fun announcement at the end about an upcoming project - so don’t miss this super fun but deep-diving episode.
What You’ll Learn from this Episode:
- How Mel has turned a lifelong love of design into a successful, niche business for speakers, thought leaders, and consultants
- Why she believes that your branding is the foundation of building trust with prospects
- Why Mel and I feel that being business besties has helped us both level up and find support through difficult challenges
- Some of the important lessons she’s learned about keeping clients on a timeline and making her own work efficient, high-quality, and fairly priced
- How Mel plans to change her business in 2020 to create an even better experience for customers while allowing her to enjoy life more
- What she’s learned about taking herself out of the business and needing to narrow down her offerings
