Podcast #14 Marli Williams's page header

Marli Williams is the founder & director of a summer camp for women entrepreneurs, leaders and changemakers. She’s also a facilitation trainer, speaker, and consultant for one-on-one service providers who want to do more group workshops, retreats, events. She helps them develop the skills, tools and the confidence to facilitate transformative group experiences.

We spoke about how her business focus has evolved from being a life coach who speaks more generally on women’s empowerment to pivoting (and owning!) her skill set as a facilitation trainer. (Which I think is just awesome!). Now she develops content and curriculum around that.

Her focus has come from looking at some of her strongest skill sets and paying attention to what people are asking for - to facilitate and lead groups like she does, and create experiences that are powerful.

One of her missions is the bring sexy back into facilitation by relating it to the desire to make an impact on the people who attend live events.

Business owners who’re bringing clients together in a retreat format need to have a very clear intention and purpose of the live event/retreat.

These are the core elements to consider:

  1. What’s your individual intention, as a facilitator? How do you want to show up?
  2. What are your intentions for your guests? What do you want them to walk away with?
  3. What are the intentions for your business?

Finding the balance of content delivery, engagement, reflection and integration (what am I going to do with the knowledge I’ve just received) is key to it being impactful.

The secrets to facilitation success are:

  • Energy and presence.
  • Empowering possibility and inspiring connection.
  • Having tools to pull out when they’re needed.
  • Show up and be “flawesome”.

“How do you build trust and rapport with other people you start by trusting yourself.”

One of her motto’s is imperfect action over perfect action, everyday.

What Mastery means to Marli:

Mastery means embodying the wisdom that I have to offer the world and delivering it in a way that feels aligned and authentic to me. This is one of my favorite quotes about Mastery... "The master in the art of living makes little distinction between her work and her play, her labor, and her leisure, her mind and her body, her education and her recreation, her love and her religion. She hardly knows which is which. She simply pursues her vision of excellence at whatever she does, leaving others to decide whether she is working or playing. To her, she is always doing both."

Turning points:

The biggest catalyst for me on my journey into this work was the 50 day Outward Bound course that I took when I was 19 years old. The most recent turning point was acknowledging and owning the wisdom I have acquired over 15 years as an educator and facilitator and choosing to lean into the work that I love and teach others how to design and facilitate interactive, engaging and transformational experiences for others. Making that choice to move in the direction of being a Master Facilitator Trainer, Consultant and Strategist has felt like the most aligned thing I have done since I started my business.

Marli's Core message:

Stop creating mediocre experiences - start creating EPIC ones. Stop speaking. Start facilitating.

Hey there. I know what it's like to try and fail over and over again. I've been through all the mindset ups and downs, feeling like a failure and wondering why it's so hard to attract amazing clients consistently.

I finally realized, more recently that I'd like to admit, I was still hiding. I was afraid to put my work into the world in case no one wanted it. What I really wanted was for someone to say, "hey you, your stuff is great, come share it with my audience".  Finally I realized that that would never happen, not until I started first.

Putting out my content and message into the world had to begin with me. I  committed to showing up consistently and building my own meaningful relationships. The result? Much more clarity about how to gain visibility and grow my brand. And, of course, THIS PODCAST which I'm thrilled to host!
